Have you lost confidence riding or handling your horse or pony?

Did you have an accident some time in the past and now you are nervous about something similar happening again on perhaps even a different horse?

Have you started riding late in life, and the amount you need to know feels daunting?

Have you just bought your first horse or pony and it seems very different to perhaps the Riding-School horse that was so familiar?

Have you just returned to riding after a long break, and your confidence is not what is was and this makes you tense?

Do you feel that you are not achieving all that you and your horse are capable of, or you have lost your motivation to keep trying?

The power of your own mind holds the key to reaching your goals; change how your sub-conscious mind thinks using Hypnotherapy,  and you can change how you feel, think and react in any given situation... I can help you do this!

Nervous Horse riders read on:

People come to horse riding from all walks of life, sometimes it‘s the realisation of a childhood dream, sometimes the re-kindling of a long lost hobby, or the interest arrives by accident, often through cross contamination... "if you can't beat them, you might as well join them", but we all have different stories to tell about our fears and anxieties and how they have affected our lives as horse riders.

The fascination we have with the horses is so embedded and entrenched in our psyche as human beings, that often it is hard to explain to someone who has never been bitten by this bug, why those of us who have, are prepared to put ourselves through so much anguish, financial hardship, anxiety, fear and often discomfort to achieve our goals. Giving up riding altogether when things seem hopeless is often not a perceived option. In an attempt to hang on to a way of life that we feel lovingly entrapped in, we will continue to keep our treasured four-legged friends as companions or pets, acknowledging inwardly that we feel frustrated with ourselves and helpless to make changes, but not knowing where to turn to so that we can begin to try to make those changes.

Each day we hope that for some reason, something has changed, we live in the hope that just one day, the feelings of fear, and dread that prevents us from riding with confidence, will some how disappear from our minds and bodies whilst we sleep through the night. We imagine the change could happen because the sun is shining on us, the wind has died down, the road works have finished, the litter has all been collected, that blooming dog is indoors; the jumps are more inviting; the poles are more solid; the cross-country ditches are shallower, the ground is good, or the fences not so high; the dressage judge will miss that spook, you will remember to breathe, the horse strikes off on the right leg, or better still, the horse has read the dressage test beforehand!

Nervous Skiers read on:

The lure of the majestic mountain ranges the exhilarating fresh air, awesome scenery outdoor eating and partying, and the comrade of other downhill skiers and snowboarding is an intoxicating formula. We approach our first skiing or boarding lessons with enthusiasm, knowing that hundreds have done this before, so how difficult can it be? The first few lessons are over, and we feel we have got to grips with the basics, snow ploughs are getting easier, and we can link our turns, and we feel ready to tentatively ski on easy green or blue, all goes well, then, as we try to move from this gentle gradient, the fear sets in...

You can't understand why, you don't seem to have any great apprehension about falling, the snow is perfect, the sun is shining, but tension and anxiety just keeps building, and then you are gripped by fear. When you eventually get to the bottom of the run, legs like jelly, the prospect of repeating this terrifying ordeal is the last thing you want to do, yet everyone else is keen to do just that, so you make an excuse and sit the next up-hill lift out...and this was meant to be a holiday, you had been looking forward to it, planned it months ago, carefully choosing the best resort, having yet more lessons, making sure you have the right skis and boots, yet still the fear factor just won't go, and you wonder if you will ever be able to join the fun on the mountains properly, or be forever forced to limit your skiing to the most simple of slopes.

Whilst you are reading this, you can probably think of any number of reasons why you have believed in the past that "today will be different", "but unfortunately, once trapped into the fear, panic, anxiety, and loss of confidence cycle, it can be really difficult to break it.

So next time your Automatic Negative Thoughts, those thoughts that jump into your mind before you have chance to challenge them, stop you in your tracks, make you fearful, anxious and tense, remember, you do have an option, you can change those thoughts, you can change those feelings and you can change the reactions that they create.

So how can you change things?

It starts by talking to a Sports Psychotherapy-Counsellor who is trained to unravel the logic behind your thoughts, feelings, and reactions; someone who understands exactly how you are feeling and why; someone who can help you identify and change those Automatic-Negative-Thoughts, someone who in the long-term, can help you to help yourself. You will learn from the process that you do have options.

You may not become the next John Whittaker, Carl Hester, or Pippa Funnel, the next Bode Miller, Hermann Maier, or Martina Ertlbut,  but you may enjoy the delights of hacking down a country lane or popping over a clear round course or doing an unaffiliated dressage test, and if you’re a skier, you may just want to enjoy skiing with friends and family, progress from beginner runs, and see more of the mountains than usual. For many of us, this is as big an accomplishment as receiving an Olympic Gold Medal; It is to these people, I dedicate this website.

Hypnosis, relaxation, and breathing techniques, can help you become a calmer, more relaxed, confident, motivated person; whether you ride / ski just for the pleasure and leisure of it; it's part of your career, or you compete at national level, this form of Sports Psychology will improve your performance as a rider, and that of your horse or pony, or you technique and skill as a skier.
